How to play Twivial

One puzzle a day, the same for everyone. Here is exactly how it works.

The daily puzzle

Every day Twivial serves five multiple-choice questions. They are picked from a bank of more than 300 general-knowledge questions, and the pick is the same for every player on the same date, so a score of 4/5 means the same thing for you and your friends. A new puzzle starts at midnight on your device's clock.

The five questions come from five different categories. You might get geography, food, sport, arts and science on one day and a different mix the next. The homepage shows which categories are in today's set before you start, without showing the questions.

Answering

Each question has four answers and one of them is right. You can click or tap an answer, or press the keys 1 to 4 on a keyboard. After you answer, Twivial highlights the correct choice in green and, if you missed, your pick in red. Press Next (or Enter, since the button is already focused) to continue.

A bar across the top shows the 20 seconds you have. It turns red in the last five seconds. If it runs out, the question counts as unanswered.

Scoring

Result Points
Right answer 100, plus 5 for every second left on the bar
Wrong answer 0
Time ran out 0

Seconds are rounded up, so a right answer with 13.4 seconds left counts 14 seconds and is worth 170 points. The highest possible score for a day is 1,000, which would mean answering all five instantly. A good, careful game usually lands somewhere between 600 and 800.

Reloading the page in the middle of a question doesn't give you a fresh timer: that question is recorded as unanswered and the game picks up at the next one.

The result grid

When you finish, Twivial builds a short text you can paste anywhere:

  • The first line shows the puzzle number, your right answers and your points.
  • The second line shows the category emoji for each question, in order.
  • The third line has one square per question: green for right, red for wrong, white for time ran out.

The grid tells people how you did without spoiling any questions. The character count next to it follows X's counting rules, where each emoji counts as two characters and a link counts as 23, so you can see that it fits easily in a post. The Post on X button opens X with the text filled in. You choose whether to send it.

Streaks and stats

Your stats live only in the browser you play in. Twivial tracks games played, win rate (a win is three or more right answers), your current streak, your best streak, your best score and how many right answers you get per game. The streak counts days in a row on which you finished the daily puzzle. Miss a day and it starts again from one.

Clearing your browser data, using a private window or switching devices starts the stats from zero. There is no account to sync them, by design.

Practice mode

Practice mode gives you ten random questions from one category, or a mixed round from all eight. You can turn the timer off if you want to think things through. Practice rounds can repeat questions you have seen before, and they don't change your streak or stats. Each category page has a link that starts a practice round straight away.
