History questions on Twivial range from the first writing systems to the end of the Cold War. Expect ancient civilizations (Sumer, Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Inca and the Khmer), dates that every textbook agrees on, explorers, inventors, and political firsts.

Dates without the dread

Only a handful of dates come up, and most have a memory hook. 1066 is Hastings. 1215 is Magna Carta. 1453 is the fall of Constantinople. 1492 is Columbus. 1776 is the Declaration of Independence. 1789 is the French Revolution. 1912 is the Titanic. 1969 is the Moon landing. 1989 is the Berlin Wall. Distractors are usually close to the real year, so a rough idea isn't always enough.

What we leave out

We don't ask questions where historians actively disagree, or where the "answer" depends on a national point of view. If a question names a first, it is a first that is widely recorded, such as Gagarin in space or Earhart's solo Atlantic flight in 1932. We also avoid anything after the early 1990s, partly so the category doesn't drift into current affairs.

How to get better at it

Learn history in chains rather than as isolated dates. Gutenberg's press (around 1450) comes just before Columbus (1492). The Wright brothers (1903) come nine years before the Titanic (1912). Chains make it easier to rule out a wrong year when you don't know the right one.
